Mount K2 (8611 meters)

Mount K2 is the second tallest mountain peak in the world, reaching a height of 8611 meters above sea level. This mountain peak is located in the border between Pakistan and china in the Gilgit- Baltistan region. Mount K2 is the highest point in the Karakoram Range and is also the highest point in Pakistan. Mount K2 is also known as Mount Godwin Austen, in honour of Henry Godwin Austen who was an early explorer in this area.

Mount K2 lies in the north-western Karakorum Range. The mountain is bordered by the Tarim sedimentary Basin to its north and the lesser Himalayas to its south. There are many glaciers on the south and east of K2. The melt waters from these vast glaciers feed the agriculture in the valleys and also contribute significantly to the regional fresh water supply. The mountain is also known as the savage mountain because of its extreme difficulty to ascent. Also this mountain peak has the second highest fatality rate amount the peaks that crosses the 8000 meters height.
